Efforts to open campuses of Pakistani universities abroad for overseas children

The Overseas Pakistanis Foundation has said that Pakistani universities are trying to open their campuses in different countries to provide education to the children of workers abroad.

During a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis, Senator Ayub Afridi, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis, said: Campuses should be established. The committee was informed that the demands made in the public petition filed by the All Pakistan Overseas Organization not only demanded establishment of university campuses abroad but also increase in the number of Pakistani schools.

Efforts for Pakistani universities abroad

In this regard, Dr. Amir Sheikh, Managing Director, OPF, said, “There are 30 schools abroad which are managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, in countries where the number of Pakistanis is very high, a proposal to set up campuses of Pakistani universities is under consideration.

He said that Pakistan's National University of Science and Technology had also visited the UAE to set up a campus there. Feasibility was also developed by meeting with Emirati officials and members of the Pakistani community. In this regard, meetings have been held at his embassy.

The committee directed that "steps should be taken not only to increase the number of Pakistani schools abroad but also to intensify efforts for the establishment of university campuses."

The Managing Director OPF said that steps would be taken to set up university campuses in the light of the committee's directives.

The committee was informed that in OPF's educational institutions in Pakistan, up to four children of Pakistanis living abroad are charged half fee and here they are also given priority in admissions. In addition, 20 per cent seats have been reserved for them in other educational institutions.

Similarly, OPF also bears 100 per cent expenses in various educational institutions under scholarships for the talented children of Pakistanis living abroad.
