The blast was caused by a gas leak that damaged a private bank and nearby offices. According to the report, 12 people were killed and several others injured in the blast. Earlier, a Sindh Rangers spokesman said the nature of the blast was being determined, while a Sindh police spokesman said in a statement that the blast was apparently caused by a gas leak in a nearby drain.

Karachi Police Chief Ghulam Nabi Memon also said that the police team has reached the spot and will be able to say something definitively only after investigation. According to TV footage, rescue workers can be seen pulling the injured out of the rubble of the destroyed building.
